Description
Product Overview
The Cushion Cover Wool 20in (51cm) brings cultural depth and striking design to your home. This Australian-made cushion cover is inspired by Tiwi Island ceremonies. During these events, people perform a series of “Yoi” dances. Some are traditional totems, while others are new songs.
Dancers are painted with turtiyanginari (natural ochres). These designs, known as Jilamara, transform the dancers and protect them from mapurtiti (spirits). As a result, the cushion cover is more than decoration. It represents culture, story, and connection.
About the Artist
This artwork is created by a Tiwi artist. Their work shares the stories and traditions of the Tiwi Islands. In addition, the designs help to preserve culture for future generations. Each Cushion Cover Wool purchased directly supports Indigenous artists and their families.
The Dreaming Story
The Cushion Cover Wool also tells the story of Tiwi Island ceremonies. For example, the Yoi dances show links to ancestors through song, dance, and ochre-painted bodies. As a result, each performance strengthens identity and passes on knowledge. The Jilamara designs used in this cushion reflect these sacred traditions.
