About the Artist
Josette Papajua is a proud Tiwi Island artist. Her work reflects the deep cultural life of her community.
She paints stories shared through generations. Her art keeps Tiwi traditions strong and alive.
The Dreaming Story: Jilamara Ceremonies
Tiwi ceremonies include Yoi—a series of dances. Some are traditional, while others tell new stories through song.
Before dancing, people paint their bodies with turtiyanginari (natural ochres). These ochres protect them from spirits and mark their role in the dance.
The body patterns are called Jilamara. They are unique, sacred, and personal.
